Prelim Evaluation

What has done good:
  • I had applied my research from magazine front covers to use on my plan cover. Used sell lines and sky lines, and a Masthead.
  • Basic photoshop skills put to use
  • Neat layout

What will be done next time:
  • Make the magazine more colourful, less plain
  • Use fonts less common, make front cover more unique
  • Add more features, more meaningful picutres, more interesting sell lines, etc.

What could have been done better:
  • Use and applying of Photoshop skills
  • Working faster

Comments:
My Prelim was print, and I chose to do a magazine about college life. It is only a starter, and the final piece will not be about college, but a music magazine instead. This task was practice, the next one will have much more improvement to it, and will certainly have much of a difference in detail.

Print Prelim/Prelim Production

This is my Print Prelim. It is called College Weekly with a front cover and a contents page.
I had chosen the layout the way it was from my knowledge on the features of a magazine, and from that I was able to make my own very first magazine cover. What was done good was the layout and colour choice, however it was too basic, despite it being all in a suitable place. What could be done better was the amount of detail, and the ability to take more advantage of the Photoshop tool.

Prelim Research

Magazines contain the following:
  • A masthead- The main title, usually decorated and to do with the the with main image
  • Skylines -the more 'minor' title going at the top. Adds more flavour to the front cover.
  • Main Image: The main feature of the magazine, usually at medium close-up to capture enough necessary details.
  • Sell Lines - side titles which end up giving attention to other features in the magazine.
  • Main title- the actual title of the magazine.

What you need to consider:

You need to consider how to attract your audience. This is because you know they want to be enticed, therefore you talk about up-to-date affairs which would catch their interest.
You also need to consider your design on the magazine, is it a pull or a push factor for others to buy it? Is it too colourful and will it drive an older audience away? Is it too bubbly and will drive the more mature away? Design is crucial for your audience to like or to not like. Knowing your genre and the reader profile of it will enable you to get a good idea of what design you should use.

For example, hip-hop. What would be attractive to that category would be a classy demeanour to the magazine, with a sort of 'old school' look. Catchy sell lines using just the right level of slang (nothing too informal or formal) to look professional and easier to relate with to that genre of music.
